Any deformities in the upper or lower jaw can leave you with an inadequate amount of bone for optimal dental implant placement. If you have had periodontal disease, wear dentures, or endured any type of injury or trauma to the mouth, we may need to fill the missing areas with a bone substitute to build up the ridge. Ridge augmentation and preservation procedures improve the appearance of the mouth and jaw, and can also increase dental implant success rates.

If we find there is not enough available bone in the upper back jaw, we cannot place dental implants without first performing a sinus lift, or sinus augmentation procedure. This procedure raises the sinus floor so that there is more bone available to secure the dental implants in place.

If too much bone is lost after gum disease or the teeth are extracted, you may benefit from guided tissue regeneration (GTR) procedures that stimulate healing and bone growth. We may use dental bone graft materials and membranes to restore any defective areas and re-contour uneven bone tissue.

Whether you have undergone scaling and root planing therapy, osseous surgery or laser gum disease treatment, we will put together a periodontal maintenance plan to further reduce the risk of infection after gum disease. This may include a series of in-office cleanings, regular checkups and using at-home care products that reduce the risk of infection.

Patients with severe gum disease who have not had any success with other periodontal therapies may be a good candidate for a gingivectomy. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia and involves removing diseased gum tissue with surgical tools. The gums are completely healed within a few weeks.
